Young Flavian Woman

This sculpture really captures the skills of her sculptor, from the extensive use of drill work in her beautiful curls to how her skins even looks like if feels soft and smooth. I enjoy the way this piece captures light in the curls, and by the angle of her face. The texture of this young flavian woman is incredible her heavy brows and sunk in eyes give me such a sense of dimension, I just cant get over how life-like she comes across.

  1. shelby i really love this work of art above me. i really love how they really put the work in each curl in her hair. Her face looks so smooth and she is at an angle. i love this. she looks at peace.

  2. Who do you think she was? An aristocrat or peasant? Why would you think that? What do you think the purpose of this bust might be?

  3. This artwork must have been SO hard to do... The curls are so detailed, that all i can really think of, is, "I want hair like THAT!" Could you imagine me coming to class like that?! But she really does look peaceful, as if she's relaxed, posing for this sculpture. And to be honest, she looks as if she's royalty. I'm sure not that many people during this time got these kinds of busts done. If they did, they must have had some serious money. Because this is beautiful. She looks like she's in her 20s.

  4. yeah I can't imagine how long it would take to make each individual curl. I can just see how much sculptors dreaded seeing people with curly hair come and want a statue haha.

  5. The hair is awesome in this, I wonder how long it took to just make one of those curls. It turned out great in the end. I think she must have been very important to someone.

  6. its all about those curls. I think they are truly the most fantastic part about this piece. When i saw this in the book i spent A LOT of time following the curls up and down. Her face is truly gorgeous; the skin, even though it is made of stone, looks fleshy and soft. This sculpture is truly alive.
